The 2025 WGA Awards nominees have been announced by the Writers Guild of America (WGA), which features a blend of well-known Oscar front-runners, surprising entries, and the inventive rearranging brought about by ineligible candidates.
The Oscar front-runner in this category is Sean Baker's critically acclaimed "Anora," which is at the top of the original screenplay list. Jesse Eisenberg's semi-autobiographical drama "A Real Pain," which has been a critical favorite this season, is another compelling candidate.
It is noteworthy that Zendaya stars in Justin Kuritzkes' romantic sports drama "Challengers." This nomination might help it regain momentum during awards season after its well-publicized loss at the BAFTA Awards. Megan Park's charming but irreverent comedy "My Old Ass" and Alex Garland's daring post-apocalyptic thriller "Civil War" add diversity to the category. Park is a DGA nominee for first-time director and received recognition for her directing debut, "The Fallout."
The Bob Dylan biopic "A Complete Unknown," starring James Mangold and Jay Cocks, is the front-runner in the adapted screenplay competition. Additionally, "Dune: Part Two" by Denis Villeneuve and Jon Spaihts made the cut, confirming its position as a dominant force in several categories this season.
Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox's smash musical screenplay for "Wicked" and RaMell Ross and Joslyn Barnes' adaptation of Colson Whitehead's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, "Nickel Boys," are two other noteworthy nominees. Conclave, Emilia Pérez, Sing Sing, and I'm Still Here were among the ineligible titles that these nominees took advantage of, giving other candidates a chance to shine.
As in prior years, there have been some high-profile exclusions due to the WGA's stringent eligibility requirements. Alongside expected adapted screenplays like Pixar's "Inside Out 2" and Sony Pictures Classics' "The Outrun," original screenplays such as "All We Imagine as Light" (Janus Films/Sideshow), "The Brutalist" (A24), and "Hard Truths" (Bleecker Street) were declared ineligible.
The impact of these ineligibilities is particularly noticeable when important contenders such as Malcolm Washington and Virgil Williams' adaptation of August Wilson's "The Piano Lesson," Robert Eggers' gothic horror "Nosferatu," and Marielle Heller's dark comedy "Nightbitch" are not included.
The exclusion of Scott Beck and Bryan Woods' horror thriller "Heretic," Halina Reijn's provocative erotic drama "Babygirl," and Sony Pictures' "Saturday Night," which offers a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of NBC's Saturday Night Live, was even more shocking.
With FX's epic adaptation of James Clavell's "Shōgun," Netflix's political thriller "The Diplomat," and three Prime Video mainstays—"The Boys," "Fallout," and "Mr. and Mrs. Smith"—the WGA stuck to fan favorites for the drama series category.
The comedy nominees had many crowd-pleasing performances but few surprises. Along with the vampire comedy "What We Do in the Shadows," other shows that received recognition included HBO/Max's"CurbYour Enthusiasm" and "Hacks," FX's culinary dramedy "The Bear," and ABC's "Abbott Elementary."
HBO/Max's"ThePenguin," Apple TV+'s courtroom drama "Presumed Innocent," and Hulu's political thriller "Say Nothing" were among the first notable mentions for possible Emmy winners in the limited series category. In the meantime, HBO/Max's"TrueDetective: Night Country" and Netflix's "Ripley" received their last mentions for this TV run.
