For the sequel, Elliott is looking for a producer partner and will return as director, writer, and producer. Bernadette (Stamp), a transgender woman, and two drag queens, Adam Whitely/Felicia Jollygoodfellow (Weaving) and Tick/Mitzi Del Bra (Pearce), travel around the Australian Outback in a bus called Priscilla in this colorful 1994 movie.
The plot of the sequel is still unknown, but it will feature an adult Tick's 7-year-old son from the first film.
"Although the film doesn't make concessions to a straight audience, it's so outrageous that it becomes positively disarming," wrote Variety reviewer David Stratton of the 1994 Cannes Film Festival premiere. Despite the obvious fact that this is clearly not for the very straight-laced, it is difficult not to respond to such a cheerfully vulgar and outspoken entertainment. It should, without a doubt, break out of the gay and cult markets and gain relatively broad acceptance.
It was nominated for two Golden Globes—one for best musical or comedy and the other for best supporting actor—along with an Oscar for outstanding costume design. Elliott and Allan Scott wrote the book for the stage musical, which had its Sydney premiere in 2006 and Broadway debut in 2011 (with producer Bette Midler).
The news was first reported by Deadline.
