‘The Odyssey’ Takes Imax to Biggest Quarterly Revenue to Date

Following an unprecedented summer season, Imax achieved its highest-ever revenue and profit figures for the third quarter of 2026.

Catalyzed by Christopher Nolan's epochal release, *The Odyssey*—which stands as the company's most lucrative production in its history—IMAX generated $175 million in revenue during the third quarter, marking a 64% surge from the $106.7 million recorded in the corresponding period of 2025.

Net income soared to $117.1 million, representing a precipitous 400% elevation from $22.6 million a year prior.Concurrently, adjusted earnings per share climbed to $2.21, an impressive 370% ascent from the 47 cents registered during the comparable previous fiscal quarter.

Amid the industry's most robust summer since the pandemic, IMAX's global box office revenue for the third quarter reached $712 million, a figure that eclipsed the previous year's $368 million by 94%.

Within IMAX theaters, the film "The Odyssey" individually generated over $550 million during this three-month span, accounting for 30% of its monumental $1.8 billion worldwide gross. This performance decisively surpassed the company's former record, held by the 2009 release "Avatar," which had collected $271 million at IMAX venues—a benchmark that remains unadjusted for inflation.

The Odyssey" served as a dominant force across the company's screens, largely owing to its status as the inaugural feature film captured entirely with IMAX cameras, a distinction that sets it apart from other major franchises which have only integrated IMAX technology for specific sequences.

During this quarter, IMAX's other highest-grossing releases included "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," "Resident Evil," and "Avengers Endgame Encore.

Rich Gelfond, CEO of IMAX, remarked that the company's accomplishments extend far beyond merely delivering an exceptional quarter; they represent a surpassing of numerous historical records established during this period.

He further posited that the organization is currently observing a profound realization of its platform's capacity to influence global culture, generate unprecedented commercial avenues, and evoke a renewed sense of demand and wonder among audiences worldwide.

In recent years, IMAX has established itself as a definitive commercial powerhouse, as audiences increasingly prefer the immersive spectacle of its expansive, luminous screens over the conventional comfort of home viewing.

Driven by this surging consumer appetite, the company is aggressively broadening its international presence, having secured agreements for more than 100 new systems globally in 2026, with 65 percent of these installations designated for previously untouched venues.Anticipating the December release of major blockbusters such as *Dune: Part Three* and *Avengers: Doomsday*—the latter of which will have a restricted IMAX screening exclusively in China—IMAX forecasts revenues that will surpass its prior estimates, pushing the 2026 total beyond $1.4 billion. This ambitious target follows a landmark performance last year, where the organization achieved a global record of $1.2 billion.

As articulated by Gelfond, the company enters the coming year with unwavering confidence, asserting that the current epoch presents an unprecedented opportunity for IMAX.

This phenomenon, termed an "IMAX awakening," is merely a facet of a broader cultural transformation wherein individuals globally—especially the younger demographic—are increasingly prioritizing connection, community, and shared experiences that transcend the limitations of any single screen.IMAX has consistently furnished such moments throughout its history, and the organization maintains that this prevailing trend is only just beginning to yield substantial advantages for its business model.
