A TV series based on the comic book ‘V for Vendetta’ is being developed by HBO, according to Variety.
Sources say Pete Jackson is writing the show.
James Gunn and Peter Safran from DC Studios are executive producers, along with Ben Stephenson from Poison Pen and Leanne Klein from Wall to Wall Media, which is part of Warner Bros. Television Studios UK. Warner Bros. Television is producing the series.
HBO and DC Studios have not commented on the news.
Representatives for Pete Jackson did not respond to Variety’s request for comment.
‘V for Vendetta’ started as a comic book created by Alan Moore and drawn by David Lloyd.
It first appeared in 1982 in the British magazine ‘Warrior,’ and DC Comics took over publishing it in 1988.
The story is set in Britain in a futuristic world where the government is ruled by a fascist group called the Norsefire.
A group of rebels, led by a masked person called V, want to bring down the government. V helps a young girl named Evey Hammond, whom he rescued from the country’s secret police.
If the series moves forward, it will be the latest DC Studios live-action show on HBO.
The network aired the drama ‘The Penguin,’ which starred Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti. That show was a follow-up to Matt Reeves’ ‘The Batman’ and won nine Emmy Awards, including one for best lead actress in a limited series for Milioti.
HBO is set to air the drama series ‘Lanterns,’ which will star Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre as Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart.
The premiere date hasn’t been set yet, but it is expected to come out in early 2026.
HBO has also aired the critically acclaimed series ‘Watchmen,’ which was based on the original graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons.
That show aired in 2019, which was three years before James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios.
Pete Jackson previously wrote the Channel 4 series ‘Somewhere Boy,’ which aired in 2022.
He was nominated for the BAFTA TV Award for writing a drama series for that show. He also shared in the nomination for best drama series. He is also writing the upcoming Sky Atlantic series ‘The Death of Bunny Munro,’ which is based on a book by Nick Cave.
Jackson is represented by UTA.
The comic book was turned into a movie in 2005, with Hugo Weaving playing V and Natalie Portman playing Evey.
James McTeigue directed the film, and the Wachowskis wrote the script. The film received good reviews and made over $130 million worldwide. It has remained popular, and Warner Bros. is planning to bring it back to theaters in November 2026 to celebrate its 20th anniversary.
Channel 4 tried to make a TV series based on the comic, but it didn’t happen.
The HBO Max/Epix series ‘Pennyworth,’ which followed Bruce Wayne’s butler Alfred in 1960s London, was also meant to be connected to ‘V for Vendetta.’ However, the show was canceled after three seasons before the story could be fully developed.
