Michael Mann’s long-awaited sequel to his 1995 crime drama “Heat,” featuring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, is finally gaining momentum. The project, titled “Heat 2,” is being negotiated for rights by Amazon MGM-owned United Artists and producer Scott Stuber. Originally set up at Warner Bros., the project was put on hold due to creative differences over the budget, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. Amazon MGM plans to release “Heat 2” in theaters.
No cast deals have been finalized, and plot details remain undisclosed.
However, Mann adapted the screenplay from a 2022 novel of the same name that he co-wrote with Meg Gardiner. Producers for the film will include Mann, Jerry Bruckheimer, Scott Stuber, and Nick Nesbitt, with Eric Roth and Shane Salerno serving as executive producers.
Celebrating its 30th anniversary in December, the original “Heat” follows a high-stakes confrontation between a Los Angeles Police Department detective and a seasoned thief.
The film was a commercial success, grossing $187 million worldwide against a $60 million budget.
Mann, known for thrillers such as “Thief,” “Collateral,” and “The Insider,” recently called “Heat” “one of the best experiences ever as a director.”
At the Busan International Film Festival in September, he mentioned that the motivation behind “Heat” was a challenge to portray characters as complex as real life. Regarding the sequel, he hinted, “I look forward to possibly shooting it in 2026. We’re in the middle of doing all the things — budgeting, scheduling, casting process.”
