Dexter: Original Sin’ Canceled Despite Renewal Announcement, ‘Dexter: Resurrection’ Season 2 Writers Room to Open Soon

"Dexter: Original Sin" is not coming back for a second season. Variety has learned that Paramount has decided not to move forward with another season of the prequel series. A renewal for Season 2 was announced in April, but sources say the show has been on a break and there are no plans to make a second season. No production dates have been set. The first season of the show started in December 2024 and ended in February.

Sources also say that Paramount is planning to start a writers room for a possible Season 2 of "Dexter: Resurrection," which is a sequel to both "Dexter" and "Dexter: New Blood."
Michael C. Hall will star again as Dexter Morgan. The first season of "Resurrection" started on July 11 and its finale is set for September 5. While a renewal isn’t guaranteed, the show has been well-received. The first episode had 4.4 million viewers across platforms in the first week, and the season has a 94% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

This decision to not make a second season of "Original Sin" comes after the Skydance-Paramount merger was finalized.
Matt Thunell, who now oversees Showtime’s production, and the new leadership team are reviewing all the shows on the network and beyond. According to someone who knows, Thunell and his team have decided to focus on "Resurrection" and Michael C. Hall’s return as Dexter Morgan as part of continuing the "Dexter" franchise.

This news comes as Showtime continues to struggle.
Once a top network for premium scripted shows like HBO, it now has fewer original shows and has rebranded as Paramount+. Its current lineup includes "The Chi," "The Agency," "Yellowjackets," and "Dexter: Resurrection."

Set in 1991, "Original Sin" is the origin story of Dexter Morgan, with Patrick Gibson playing the young version of the character.
Michael C. Hall provided the young Dexter’s inner thoughts. The cast also included Molly Brown, Christina Milian, Christian Slater, James Martinez, Alex Shimizu, Reno Wilson, special guest star Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Patrick Dempsey.

Clyde Phillips, who was the original showrunner and executive producer of "Dexter," came back to do the same for "Original Sin" and was also the series’ creator.
Michael C. Hall and Scott Reynolds, Mary Leah Sutton, Tony Hernandez, and Lilly Burns were also executive producers. Michael Lehmann, who directed "Heathers," directed and produced the series. Robert Lloyd Lewis was a producer as well. The show was made by Showtime Studios and Counterpart Studios. Gary Levine and Urooj Sharif oversaw it for Showtime Studios, and Tara Power supervised production. The series was produced by Showtime Studios and Counterpart Studios, and distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution outside of Paramount+ areas.
