The new movies from Austin Butler's crime thriller "Caught Stealing," Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman's comedy "The Roses," and an unrated remake of "The Toxic Avenger" all won't beat the fourth weekend for "Weapons" in the box office race, as the summer season ends over the Labor Day holiday.
Sony’s "Caught Stealing" did best among the three, making $3.2 million on its opening day across Friday and some previews from 3,578 theaters.
Directed by Darren Aronofsky, this New York noir had a preview last Saturday. It's expected to make $9.5 million during the four-day holiday weekend, which is not as strong as hoped. This well-reviewed R-rated movie had a $40 million budget. People's reactions are mixed, with a CinemaScore grade of "B."
Meanwhile, Searchlight Pictures is releasing its own R-rated comedy, "The Roses," directed by Jay Roach, based on Warren Adler's novel "The War of the Roses," about a rich marriage that turns violent.
Danny DeVito directed a 1989 version, with Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner, which made $86 million and was the 12th highest-grossing film of that year.
Times have changed, though, and a comedy like "The Roses" isn't as popular in theaters, even with big names like Cumberbatch, Colman, Andy Samberg, Kate McKinnon, and more.
It made just $2.4 million from 2,700 locations on Friday and previews, and is likely to end up in fifth place. It's aiming for over $7 million in its four-day opening. Reviews were not great, but CinemaScore gave it a "B+" rating.
"Caught Stealing" and "The Roses" could both be beaten by Universal's re-release of "Jaws," which is back in theaters for its 50th anniversary.
Even after five decades, the big fish still draws lots of people with $3 million from 3,200 venues on Friday and previews. "Jaws" is expected to make $9.7 million over four days, placing it second in domestic numbers. That's impressive, especially since it made a nostalgia film just three years ago, with a re-release in 1,246 theaters back in 2022.
Meanwhile, Warner Bros. and New Line's ensemble horror movie "Weapons" is back to the top after being overtaken last week by Netflix's two-day event release of "KPop Demon Hunters."
(Of course, Netflix didn't report the gross earnings, since it doesn't focus on theaters.)
"Weapons" made another $2.7 million on Friday, which is 42% less than the previous day's numbers.
This suggests it will continue to do well, thanks to strong word-of-mouth. It's expected to reach $134 million domestically by Labor Day, and is close to becoming the 12th-highest-grossing film of the year, approaching "Final Destination Bloodlines" with $138 million.
Disney's "Freakier Friday" is also staying in fourth place almost a month into its run, adding $1.7 million on Friday, which is 37% less than the previous week's numbers.
Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis’ comedy sequel is likely to reach $82 million domestically by Monday.
Further down the list, Cineverse and Iconic Releasing are showing the unrated remake of "The Toxic Avenger" in 1,995 venues after it premiered at Fantastic Fest in 2023 and struggled to find a distributor.
The film, starring Peter Dinklage, Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Paige, and Elijah Wood, made about $650,000 on Friday and previews, and is expected to miss the top 10.
