China Box Office: Jackie Chan’s ‘Ride On’ Wins Another Weekend While ‘Mario Bros’ Fails to Level Up

As his most recent action-comedy Ride On maintained its hold on the top spot at the Chinese box office for the second consecutive weekend, aging action legend Jackie Chan galloped away with yet another victory. The Super Mario Bros. Movie, produced by Universal Pictures, struggled to keep up, finishing fourth in the frame.

As per information from consultancy Craftsman Entryway, Ride On procured $6 million (RMB41.5 million) for the end of the week, addressing a decent 48 percent week-on-week drop from its $11.7 million opening the week earlier. Since its April 7 release, the movie has already generated $22.6 million in ticket sales. Maoyan, a ticketing app, predicts that the title's career earnings will total $33 million (RMB230 million).

Hachiko, from iQiyi Pictures, came in second with $4.9 million more over the weekend, bringing its total since its March 31 release to $35.1 million. The film, which depends on the exemplary Japanese story of a steadfast canine who hangs tight for his proprietor consistently at the train station, has been a respectable minor success with audiences in China.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie, on the other hand, continued to disappoint, making just $17.1 million after 10 days in China with $4.3 million in its second weekend. This is only a small fraction of the $347.8 million the movie made in the United States. Top IP-driven studio tentpoles used to rarely have such large gaps between their domestic and Chinese sales totals.

Faces in the Crowd, a period action film, opened in fifth place with $3 million as the week's new release.

China's total box office for 2023 is $2.5 billion, up 20% from the same time last year, when the market was hit hard by COVID-19 lockdowns and movie theater closures. This year's start is down 17% when compared to the 2019 benchmark year before the pandemic.

However, with the release of the Japanese anime hit The First Slam Dunk on Friday, analysts anticipate a surge in box office activity. China Film Group and Road Pictures, the marketer and distributor responsible for Suzume's recent success in the local market, are jointly distributing the film.
