Benoit Blanc, the detective, is getting ready to leave for Canada.
The third murder mystery in director Rian Johnson's popular series, "Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery," will make its international premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival this year. The list now includes that film as well as a number of others, such as Channing Tatum's action comedy "Roofman" and Chloe Zhao's Shakespearean drama "Hamnet."
TIFF also hosted the world premieres of Johnson's two previous whodunits in the trilogy, "Knives Out" from 2019 and "Glass Onion" from 2022. Alongside the new cast of Josh O'Connor, Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner, Kerry Washington, and Andrew Scott, Daniel Craig will return to his role as Benoit Blanc, the detective with a distinctively Southern drawl, in "Wake Up Dead Man."
Toronto will also host the world premiere of "Roofman," which is based on the real story of a professional burglar and former Army ranger who finds a hiding place inside a Toys "R" Us. In the meantime, Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley's fictionalized portrayal of William Shakespeare's son, "Hamnet," will make its Canadian premiere at TIFF. This means that the film will first appear at another festival before traveling to the Six.
Nicholas Hytner's "The Choral," Agnieszka Holland's "Franz," Neeraj Ghaywan's "Homebound," Paul Greengrass' "The Lost Bus," Rebecca Zlotowski's "A Private Life," HIKARI's "Rental Family," Peter Ho-Sun Chan's "She Has No Name," and Clement Virgo's "Steal Away" are among the other new films that have been added to the TIFF schedule.
"TIFF has supported international films that broaden our perspectives and unite us since its founding," stated Anita Lee, the festival's chief programming officer. "We are thrilled to announce 11 additional films from our special presentations and gala programs, which highlight the outstanding creativity and quality of today's most innovative and celebrated filmmakers. These movies showcase a wide variety of voices and aesthetics that perfectly capture TIFF's essence and our dedication to a general audience.
The 50th edition of the festival will be held from September 4–14. The festival will begin with "John Candy: I Like Me," a documentary on the late comic produced by Ryan Reynolds and directed by Colin Hanks. "The Christophers" by Steven Soderbergh and "Hedda" by Nia DaCosta had previously been added to the docket. Over the course of the next month or two, TIFF is anticipated to gradually unveil the remainder of its schedule in accordance with tradition.
