Box Office: ‘Super Mario Bros.’ Triumphs Again in Fourth Weekend, ‘Are You There God?’ Debuts to Dispiriting $6.8 Million

With a staggering $40 million in its fourth frame, "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" continues to dominate the weekend box office. These ticket sales, which were only 33% lower than the previous weekend, were sufficient to easily dominate the weekend's newcomers, including the literary adaptation of "Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret,” the biopic "Big George Foreman," and the Finnish war drama "Sisu."

"Mario" has raked in $490 million in North America and $532 million worldwide after four weeks on the big screen, making it the highest-grossing movie of 2023. Additionally, it is the first movie of the year to gross over $1 billion worldwide. That number only applies to five blockbusters made during the pandemic.

"God, are you there? The new movie "It's Me, Margaret" did the best, opening in third place with $6.8 million from 3,343 theaters in North America. Since it is anticipated to have limited international appeal, those are rocky ticket sales for the $30 million-budgeted coming-of-age story based on Judy Blume's classic novel.

The Lionsgate adaptation has received positive reviews, marking Blume's first permission for Hollywood to adapt her books. Audiences gave it an "A" CinemaScore, and critics gave it a 99% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. PostTrak found that 81% of the film's opening weekend viewers were female and 81% were over the age of 25.

According to David A. Gross, CEO of the film consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research, "Coming-of-age stories draw bigger audiences when they start to deal with direct romance in the teens years." He is referring to movies like "Juno" and "Lady Bird." He continues, "The audience's largest segment so far is women over 45 who are familiar with the book." This is a movie about a preteen girl's life, but girls aren't attending in large numbers right now.

So, the studio is hoping that "Margaret" will continue to get good reviews until Mother's Day in the middle of May. Abby Ryder Fortson ("Insect Man and the Wasp") plays the 11-year-old hero, who wrestles with adolescence and religion as her family (Rachel McAdams and Benny Safdie play her folks) moves from New York City to suburbia.

The high-octane war thriller "Sisu," which Lionsgate acquired at the Toronto Film Festival, debuted at No. 10 at the domestic box office despite playing in thousands of theaters. However, both "Sisu" and "Big George Foreman" failed to win over audiences. 10 out of 1,006 venues, with $3.2 million. That is significantly less than the typical nationwide release. Jalmari Helande directed and wrote the well-reviewed film about a lonely prospector who meets Nazis on a scorched-earth retreat in northern Finland during the desperate days of World War II.

Big George Foreman: Sony Even worse, The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future World Champion opened in 11th place with a meager $3 million from 3,054 theaters. The biopic, in which Khris Davis plays the world heavyweight boxing champion, received mixed reviews (45% on Rotten Tomatoes) but an "A-" CinemaScore from audiences. Due to its $32 million price tag, the PG-13 film will struggle to make a profit at the box office unless momentum picks up in the coming weeks.

“The theatrical standard for sports biographies is, "Did they change the world?" despite the fact that George Foreman was a champion athlete who lived a very interesting life. the way Jackie Robinson and Muhammad Ali did," says Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research. Pundits are not excited."

Somewhere else at the homegrown film industry, remnants — from ten years and others — balanced the main five.

With $12.2 million from 3,417 theaters, Warner Bros. and New Line's supernatural horror sequel "Evil Dead Rise" came in second place. That is a half plunge from its introduction. "Evil Dead Rise" has so far brought in $42 million worldwide and $44.4 million in North America. Considering that the $15 million-budget film was initially planned to premiere on HBO Max prior to a conventional theatrical release, those are promising returns.

In fourth spot, "John Wick: In its sixth weekend, Chapter 4" earned $5 million from 2,481 venues. Until this point, the film has earned a heavenly $176 million locally and $375 million internationally. Overtaking 2019's "John Wick: Chapter 2," it is the action film directed by Keanu Reeves with the highest grossing entry. Chapter 3: Parabellum" costs 328 million dollars.

The Star Wars: The 1983 film "Return of the Jedi" won the competition. 5th place with $4.7 million from just 475 theaters. Disney demonstrated the film's continued popularity by bringing it back to theaters to mark its 40th anniversary. "Return of the Jedi" has made $311 million in North America and $475 million worldwide after being released multiple times.

"Polite Society," which won a Sundance Award, failed in limited release with $800,000 from 927 theaters, or $858 per location. Nida Manzoor coordinated the film, a crazy classification mashup around two sisters. The younger sibling, who has aspirations to become a martial artist, believes she must protect her older sibling from marrying. Center Highlights is disseminating "Respectable company," which holds a 91% on Bad Tomatoes yet handled a "B+ "CinemaScore.

Chief film critic Peter Debruge compared the film to cult classics like "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" in Variety's review, writing that "if'Polite Society' manages to find its audience, it has the makings of a generational touchstone."
